The GGECCW was established in 2016 to explore emerging technologies in the area of Internet-based autonomous weapons systems (Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems/LAWS). Among other things, the Group is considering a moratorium or a general ban on the development and application of LAWS, following the model of the UN Conventions banning biological and chemical weapons.
