The WEF has intensified its focus on Internet issues since the middle of the 2010s. Within the framework of the initiatives for the 4th Industrial Revolution it launched the "Digital Economy and Society" project and established a "Center for Cybersecurity". Moreover, it submitted research reports on "Internet Fragmentation", "Data Localisation" and "National Digital Policies" to the WEF Annual Conference as a basis for discussion.
In December 2017, the WEF launched the initiative “Enabling e-Commerce” with the WTO and the Chinese company AliBaba to promote digital trade.
