Q1/2020 - Group of Governmental Experts for Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (GGE LAWS)

Jānis Kārkliņš, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia, was appointed new Chair of the GGE on LAWS for the year 2020. From 2003 to 2005, Jānis Kārkliņš served as President of the second phase of UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). From 2006 to 2010, he was Chairman of the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) of ICANN. From 2011 to 2015, he held the position of Assistant Director-General of UNESCO. Since then he has been Permanent Representative of Latvia to the United Nations in Geneva. For 2020, the GGE on LAWS has scheduled two one-week meetings. The first one is planned to take place at Geneva from 21 to 26 June^[1].
