United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD)

At the WSIS II summit in Tunis, the UNCSTD was granted the mandate to follow up the implementation of the resolutions adopted by WSIS. It had a key function in the preparations of the 1st WSIS Review conference (WSIS+10/2015) and will have a similar role at the 2nd WSIS Review conference (WSIS+20/2015).

UNCSTD established two independent Working Groups, one dealing with the “Improvements of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF)” (2011 - 2012) and the other with “Enhanced Cooperation on Public Issues Pertaining to the Internet” (2013 - 2018). Both were composed in line with the multistakeholder principle, which means that representatives from the various non-governmental groups, i. e. the private sector, civil society and the technical community, are involved on equal terms.

The reports and recommendations compiled by the working groups are forwarded to the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly by the UNCSTD via the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The UNCST meets once a year and reports to ECOSOC.
