World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)

The two WSIS summits were held 2003 in Geneva and 2005 in Tunis. The “Plan of Action” developed at the Geneva summit defines 16 action lines that cover all areas of the information society. The “Tunis Agenda” lay the foundation for the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), an institution that deals with any kind of Internet Governance issues. The first WSIS Review conference (WSIS+10) was held in 2015. A second Review conference (WSIS +20) is planned for 2025.

The activities of the World Summit on the Information Society are coordinated by the United Nations Group on the Information Society (UNGIS). UNGIS comprises 30 UN bodies. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) acts as UNGIS chair.
