Q2/2020 - Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development

Agenda for Action, 02 April 2020

At an extraordinary virtual meeting on 2 April 2020, the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development adopted an “Agenda for Action” to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on the information and communications sector. The Agenda covers three broadband pillars: resilient connectivity, affordable Internet access and safe dissemination of information.  Speakers at the meeting included Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of the ITU and Fabrizio Hochschild, UN Under-Secretary-General. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay noted that one billion students worldwide were affected by school closures. This had led to a further deepening of inequalities and injustices in the education sector, which could only be remedied by improved global digitisation[1].
